What is Colorado provençal?
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Colorado de Rustrel was an ochre mining site in the Luberon. Located in the Luberon region, it has become a listed site brimming with breathtaking sights and landscapes. Take the Provençal Colorado trail and you’ll discover a mix of deserts, forests and ochre mining remains. A combination of natural erosion, arid landscape and man’s handiwork, the Colorado de Provençal site is unique in France. The industrial past of the Colorado de Rustrel is still palpable today, but since the end of the twentieth century it has been a popular tourist destination.

The Colorado of Provence: the Sahara circuit
This is the best-known hike on the Colorado de Rustrel. Accessible to all walkers. The ride takes around 40 minutes and covers a distance of 2.1 kilometers. On this route, you’ll discover sandy paths, unique colors and arid landscapes emblematic of the Colorado of Provence. Beware: the route is steep and narrow, making it impossible for anyone with reduced mobility to access. Bring sun cream and a hat in case of hot weather. A parking lot is available at the trailhead to give you access to the tour.
The lookout trail: total immersion in the Colorado of Rustrel
The belvedere circuit is the longest footpath in the Colorado de Rustrel. This nearly 4km route takes you to the heights of Colorado. Discover lunar landscapes, surprising colors and enjoy the view of the Sahara Trail. Please note that the path is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Bring hiking boots, a hat and sunscreen in case of hot weather. Parking is available at the trailhead for easy access.
Practical info: how to get to Colorado provençal?
The Colorado Provençal natural site is open all year round, except on Sundays and public holidays. But timetables vary according to the season. Plan to leave the site around 5.30pm in winter and 8pm in summer. Entry fees to Colorado provençal also vary according to your vehicle (car, camper van, motorcycle, etc.), and also the season. Don’t forget to book your visit to the Colorado de Rustrel, especially during the high season.
